This is a file format for storing projects in the GIMP image editor. It supports the storage of vector and bitmap graphics, layers, guides, selections, and channels that are saved in an XCF project in a compressed form but without loss of quality. AVIF is the youngest, but most efficient and advanced codec for image compression. AVIF file size is 10 times smaller than JPEG with the same image quality. AVIF supports not only Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) images but also High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Color Gamut (WCG). It can store both image items and image sequences. AVIF is a HEIF conformant format. Netflix has published the first AVIF image in 2018, but still only a few software support it.
