The format was developed by Mamiya for use in its own cameras. It is mainly used to store photos in uncompressed form for further processing without loss of quality. PCX is standard presentation graphics developed by ZSoft Korporation. Used graphics program ZSoft PC Paintbrush for MS-DOS, word processing and desktop publishing applications, such as Microsoft Word and Ventura Publisher.
