This is an expansion of the PostScript programming language that’s often used in the publishing business. It was developed in 1982 by Adobe Systems. AVIF is the youngest, but most efficient and advanced codec for image compression. AVIF file size is 10 times smaller than JPEG with the same image quality. AVIF supports not only Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) images but also High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Color Gamut (WCG). It can store both image items and image sequences. AVIF is a HEIF conformant format. Netflix has published the first AVIF image in 2018, but still only a few software support it.
