Since 2007, Microsoft began to use a file format docx, which is created by using the Office Open XML. The format is a zip-file containing the text in the form of XML, graphics and other data that can be translated into a sequence of bits using patent-protected binary formats. The SXW file format was originally created for StarOffice Writer, the word processing application for Sun Microsystem's StarOffice suite. Programs that can open SXW files include StarOffice Writer and OpenOffice.org Writer. To open an SXW file in Microsoft Word, it's usually possible by renaming it as a DOC file.
