This is an obsolete file archive format. It can store several uncompressed or compressed files in one archive, which can be decompressed with the help of a special tool. It was the forerunner to the ZIP format. It was used in MS-DOS and Macintosh computers.

This format works based on the main compression algorithm LZMA. It was originally used in 7-Zip archives. Other compression algorithms can be used in 7z since this format has open architecture for developers. It has a high compression coefficient. The encryption algorithm is AES-256.
