The format was originally developed for the Utah Raster Toolkit software package for managing bitmaps. The compression algorithm provides a replacement for repeating strings of bytes into pairs, which significantly reduces the file size.

SIX is an alternative extension of the SIXEL bitmap graphics format. It was developed for terminals and printers by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). SIX actually means six pixels of which an image stored in the format consists.
