The format was developed by Mamiya for use in its own cameras. It is mainly used to store photos in uncompressed form for further processing without loss of quality. It was created on the basis of the RAW-file principle. It contains a complete set of information that was obtained from the camera lens.

This format is used for storing bitmap images with improved levels of color and brightness performance. It combines exposures to record darker tones in the shadows or detail in the lighter areas of a given photo. HDR is able to combine multiple images with different levels of light distribution. It is used to create rich images.
